Jarrett,

I'm using 2LB density polyurethane close cell pour foam. It comes in two containers, you mix equal amount of each parts (A & B), stir the mixture for 20-40 seconds depending on the days conditions, and pour it as a high viscosity liquid into your "mold". As the chemical reaction of both parts takes place the liquid begins to expand in foam form, and becomes hot. When it cures its very rigid, you can stand on it and it will take your abuse. They sell these foams in different lb densities. Keep in mind that these types of foam will expand a LOT, but if you do this on a cold day the foam will not expand as well. The colder the less expansion. Good temperature for reasonable expansion begins around 72F I would say.

Hey where are you getting all your glass supplies? I gotta do the same thing to cover 310 sq feet on my restoration. I already got a bunch of 1708, but I was thinking of one layer of 1708 and fairing with microballoons, but after seeing what you did, I'm considering going the 1708-mat-6oz route. What did you use for the top cloth?

Danny,

Glass supplies are bought locally in San Diego, la mesa to be more specific, the store's name is Diversified Materials, they have an internet store-front, but I don't know how much shipping would be, I would consider going to the store to pick up what you need if you can make the trip. The owners name is Dave and he has all you would need to complete your project, he also makes discounts if you buy in good quantities. By this time they know me there so I'm given the discount price even if I only buy one gal of gelcoat. Diversified Materials is where to get the hardcore stuff. Their web is Home - Fiberglass Warehouse

As far as cloth weight goes, I think I bought something like 3-4oz, can't seem to remember of the top of my head, but I can say I didn't get the heavy cloth, with the larger woves, I got the light stuff where the woves are really tight. Its called finishing cloth I believe, just ask Dave. Make sure that you lay the mat and cloth at the same time, you could do the 1708 first and then the last two layers like I did, and that will give you time to sand whatever overlaping you might have done withe the 1708. When applying the mat+clot be sure not to do overlaping of the mat or it will show when it cures and you will have to sand it down. I wouldn't use anything lighter than a 1.5oz mat, the mat is the cushion that will provide a leveled finish, the cloth is to make it smooth.

And don't forget to do the cabosil + microbubble mixture and apply it before the mat+cloth cures, don't do it beforo either or you will end up moving your layers as you run your squeege with the paste. It will be much easier if you do this with someone else, just remember to explain everything that is going to happen before you begin, once you begin you're running against the clock. In the begining I used to take a lot of time to explain to whoever was helping me the do's and dont's and why things needed to be done a certain way. Anyway.... good luck....

If you have any more questions feel free to ask, I'm not explaining a lot of stuff, just the basics, over the photos of it will be a very long read and not everybody is interested in that, just trying to keep it in the middle there.....

Thanks for the tips Josh- I'm doing my 3rd restore now, but this is the most in depth, and your glass jobs look awesome so I figure it never hurt to get more info! I'll check out that site you told me about, I was going to use a place up in Newport but they're freakin closed on the weekend WTF??? Thanks Bro, and keep the pics coming!!

Scott- I hear ya on that one- the wife doesn't even want me bringing this one home, I gotta do all the work on base with a 3000w inverter hooked up to the truck
