1956 Mercury

1956 OB1.jpg (25.2 KB) look at what my brother a state sale,a 1956 Mercury 2 stroke out board Mark 75, the motor was only ran in fresh water only for 4 years, and for the age it has no rust at all, now it hasn't ran in 48 years and was stored in a garage covered in a canvas when the owner's wife became pregnant, and it has not been used since 1960. It came off an old Chiss Craft. He also has the original manuals for the motor.
My brother knows I go on BD all the time and want to know if I could ask you guys if you know anything about this type of motor so that he can know how much it would take to fix it or if he should sell it as collectable.
Any and all advice is appreciated thanks guys

the nexus between motor stored under canvas and wife becoming pregnant is? jeez, how old is the mom having a kid? ... the motor should make that trailer haul ass

As I have read, there are lots of old outboards around since they don't take up a lot of space and everybody thinks they are worth a lot of money. I would think it will take a special person to buy! I also have 4 old ones and am looking for a home for them.

Old outboard values...

You might want to give Brad @ Amber Marine in Costa Mesa a call.

He works on, restores, and sometime buys old iron. He has a great collection of them at his shop.

My dad gave me his old boat when I was 17. It had a '58 merc 25h.p. tiller. I used to take a tool box full of screwdrivers with me. Constantly adjusting the high and low speed screws. Everytime I got on a plane and hit a bump I would drop a screwdriver overboard. Good times back then.

That wood be a nice piece for someone restoring a 50's - 60's style boat.

I can remember (almost) the early 50's on Bethel Isl. fishing my uncles boat with a Merc that looked similer, but not that much H.P.

You'll need to change the impeller before you try running it. Also, remove the plugs and squirt some WD40 in there. Propably need to rebuild the carbs but try to get it to run first. Also, the oil in the lower end.

Also, you have to mix the oil and gas together (50:1). Any water in the fuel will cause a loss of lubrication, so use fresh fuel.

Last bit of advice, don't run to far on the first couple of trips and buy BoatUS. Good luck.

BTW, I finally gave away my seized up 1966 65hp two stroke. Water in fuel got mine. Was glad to get it out of my garage but it was a cool motor.
