Channel Islands- Seabiscut 5-19-06

Left Channel Islands at 10.00 PM aboard the Seabiscut for Santa Rosa Island under thick marine layer. Capt. Bob gave us intro's & oriantation then headed for the bunk. Started to make bait (squid) at 4 PM. Sunrise tried a couple of drifts but then went straight to south side of Santa Rosa Isalnd. Live squid worked. Fished for aprox three hours south side. I landed my first WSB of the year. 3/0 and 4/0 pointed hooks worked well. Circle hook did not. Love my Avet LX on the Californian. It wasn't a hawg only 10 # but just the same a thrill. Thanks to deck hand and friend Shawn for his tips. Funny as we were talking he was explaining to me you will feel a bump bump and then a hit, let the WSB take it for three seconds and then set the hook. Well he would talk and it happened just as he was talking. Really strange. I was on the bow and the fish went under the anchor chain. Passed the rod under the chain to Shawn and then circled around with a long piece of seaweed attached. Managed to keep alert and bring her in. Two other WSB and 3 halibuts were caught. The largest butt was around 30# for the jackpot.

Went for rock cod on the north side and landed 4 nice size reds, 6 chuckleheads, blue bass, and johnny bass. The white Gulp mullet worked great. Any green plastic worked for the Calico. One of the guys hooked onto a 100# black sea bass that was released at the surface. Could you believe even some nice size calico bass were caught at 70 feet. Batrays took some for a ride and I even got hooked on something that kept letting out my 30#pline on the Saltist 50 with my drag almost all the way down. Didn't want to get spooled so I shook it and off it went. Could have been a Batray or maybe another Black Sea Bass. I didn't get to crank it one full turn.

It was a blast and hat's off to Captan Bob and the crew you sure know where the bite is on.
