So i went out with a last minute (well kind of) decision with a good friend of mine. We aboarded the Pacific Eagle on an Overnight trip to Santa Rosa Island. We left Port Hueneme on Saturday night fishing Sunday. The ride out there was rough...all i heard in the bunks were Boooooshhhhhhhhh Booooshhhhhhh. I didn't get to sleep much but oh well.
Got up at 5:20am Sunday and started fishing for WSB. Instantly within minutes soaking my live squid on a dropper loop, i got bit and brought up this WSB. The boat limited out withing 30mins with 24 WSB/24 passengers. I didn't get a chance to catch and release a second one, or to hookup a bigger one to win JP. After we got our limits of WSB, we left to the rockfishing grounds. I was looking around our neightboring boats, we were the first to leave the WSB area.
We pretty much hopped around different spots to target some nice Rockfish. I was using Gulp Curlytail Grubs with a full squid. I must of caught over 30 rockfish total. Fromt he 30, those that are worth mentioning were 6 Reds, 3 Salmon groupers, 4 Johnny Bass, 2 Chuckleheads, 4 Lingcods (shorts), and a Big Mama Cow Cod (Released). We eventually got limits and left the island around 1:30ish.
Overall, the trip was fun despite the rough swells, up the 9ft! The Captain and Deckhands were great. They are fast to come help you unhook/release/gaff fish. I definitely recommend this boat to any of you guys thinking about fishing the Channel Islands. Well, this sums it up for my report. Cheers!
