Did an overnight trip with Steve “sbabcock_26” and Jason “jscrib” aboard my 23ft Seaswirl Striper “Big Drum”. We were going to leave on Saturday morning to fish Santa Rosa Island but decided late to run out to Santa Cruz Island on Friday evening. We anchored up at Coches Prietos for the night and caught a bunch of nice size Spanish/Jack Mackerel to use for bait the next day.
Headed over to the Eagle Nest area of Santa Rosa Island on Saturday and power trolled our Jack Mackerel for about an hour and a half for nada. Both the Mirage and Pacific Dawn were in the area, so it couldn’t have been too bad of an area to try fishing.
When we noticed the wind starting to pick up from the west, we decided to head out to deeper water to get a limit of Rockfish.
Here is Jason with a nice Copper Rockfish that he caught on the plastic.
Here is Steve with and pair of beautiful Vermilion Rockfish.
Here is a picture of our limit of Rockfish.
After getting a limit of Rockies, we went in shallow and fished the kelp beds for a short time. Here is Jason with a nice Calico Bass that ate a Big Hammer swim bait.
We fished a few beaches for some medium size Barred Surfperch but couldn’t connect on any of the big slab Perch that live at the island; however, we did come across an Elephant Seal haul out area at Ford’s Point Cove while Perch fishing.
Here is a picture of the boiler rock at San Augustin Canyon where Steve farmed a keeper Lingcod at the boat. Ouch!!
Here is picture of a rocky point with East Point and Santa Cruz Island in the background. What an absolutely beautiful day.
We bounced balled for a few hours later in the afternoon using flashers and Jack Mackerel but couldn’t get any of those fabled Santa Rosa Barn Door Flatties to bite our baits. We’ll gettem’ next time. All in all it was an awesome day to be out on the water and the wind God’s were nice to us. Can’t wait to do another over night trip to the enchanted Channel Islands. HOOK-UP!!
