| Overnight on the Mirage 9-21
Went out on our overnight charter on the Mirage out of Channel Islands Sportfishing Center fishing Monday, 9/21. We had a tank of live squid with hopes of a few Seabass before going for rockfish. Had a bumpy ride out, but once we got behind the islands, it wasn't a bad ride. Anchored up on the back side of Santa Rosa Island. Put the baits out, but no love. We hooked a sea lion, a soupfin shark, and a mystery fish that we didn't see before it was lost. Tried a few shallow water spots for a handful of whitefish, blue rockfish, and some Sheephead. Went out to where we wanted to fish the deep stuff. The fish were biting, but the wind was blowing NW about 20 kts. and the current was screaming uphill. Lots of lost gear. We moved to some spots out of the wind, but the current was relentless. More lost gear. Took us all day to fill our limits of quality reds, chuckleheads, bocaccio, and johnny bass. Had a great time. Finished the day losing 4 jigs (OUCH!) myself. Once again, my 84 year old uncle, Tom Kawaratani of Montebello, scratched out the jackpot fish: a 10# lingcod. The guy is a fishing machine! Big thanks to Captain Joe Villareal, Tucker, Dan, Miguel, and Andrew.
Good fishing,
