| Pacific Star Trip Report 8/11-12

We finally caught some albacore!!!!!! While waiting at Seaforth Landing to load onto the Pacific Star, we were watching the fish being brought up to the landing from other boats that came in and the results looked OK. Not a whole lot of fish but it was a lot better than seeing no fish at all. Talking with a few anglers coming off the boats they said it was kind of rough out there. So we're thinking it going to be rock and roll out there. We finally loaded onto the boat around 9:30PM and were a little disheartened about the rod racks. There are over 130 rod racks on the boat so I limited everyone to five rods each but there are only around 80 rod racks on the deck level and the balance is upstairs on the top deck. So we will be limiting 3 rods on the lower deck per person and the balance will have to go on top. Any open rod holders will be available after everyone has their three rods in the lower racks first.
Anyway, we headed down to the bait receivers down in Point Loma to get our bait. The bait at Seaforth was not too good. After we got loaded up with medium to large sardines, we headed to an area about 60 miles out and started trolling. We ended up with a total of three albacore and two bonita caught on the troll for the two days. Most of our albacore was caught on the meter readings. Best stop was around two dozen albies.
There were two yellows caught on a kelp paddy on saturday morning and it was pretty dismal for the morning until the afternoon where we picked up a few here and there until around 4:00PM where we metered some fish that wanted to bite for our best stop. We ended up with 53 quality Albies from 22-36 1/4# and two yellows about 15# each for the day.
The largest was caught by John Hart on 20# test with 20# Flourocarbon leader which was the hot ticket. Numerous fish were caught on straight 20 and a few on heavier line but the best was with a 20# flourocarbon leader and butt or nosed hooked sardines. John hart donated his first albie to the galley for our sushi noon snack and Shane (galley chef) gave us a beautiful spread of five different types albacore sushi along with platters of sashimi with the wasabi and ginger. It was a restaurant quality spread.
Sunday morning was slow with one jig fish (a nice 30#+ albie) caught by Kelly Farnsworth(guest). Later in the morning we spotted schools of tuna (yellowfin) and they would not eat our baits but one was caught on a jig up on the bow that was around 18# caught by Andy Schickling (guest). We eventually picked up a total of 22 more albies for the day and two bonita caught on the troll (caught by Matt Williams and Jack Giauque) before we headed for home.
We had just one jackpot for $100.00 for the largest fish for the trip and John Hart won it hands down and gave the money to the crew. Great job John!!!There were at least a dozen albies over 30#. Congrats to Joe and Joey Davis on catching their first albies. On behalf of the Challengers we would like to thank our guests that helped us fill some of our openings for coming out and what a great bunch of guys: Eric Ramirez,Ted Kwong, Andy Shickling, Kelley Farnsworth, and Jim Stumpff. I would like to extend an invitation for all of them to join our club and will always be welcome to join us on any of our charters. Our totals were 75 quality albacore, one yellowfin, two yellowtail and two bonita for the trip.
I have one opening left for the September 15-16 two day trip. Who wants to take it!!! Take care everybody!!
