Super bars for salmon

Hi Fred!

Hey, just took delievery of another set of Archer Super Bars yesterday from Bud. Look great. BTW, I got this last set in PINK.

Anywho, was thinking about giving them a go prior to tuna showing up as salmon gear for nooks and coho. I do not see one reason why these would not work for that purpose. Am I right or wrong on this one? I was thinking I would try trolling the pink with a white tailing hootchie and a chunk of herring or anchovie hidden under the skirt. I have always had fantastic success trolling with hootchies and chunk bait so this really seems to be a natural transition to give a go.

What da ya think? BTW can't wait to try them on the tuna in a couple of weeks when they show. I'll give ya a first hand report.

Bernie

Rick, I was unable to go to the MR meeting last night. Would love to try them.

Fred has not answered here but I will tell you that I will be giving them a go this weekend if we can get off shore to fish salmon. Saturdays prediction is not that great but Sunday looks doable. Will let you guys know.

Naknekm, I purchased my bars through Sealicious whom you will find on the Oregon board. Fred does have a catalog and I am sure if he responds to this post he will see that you get one.

What is the best way to rig the squid?

Do you use a small weight with the squid or just use a bead or plug?

Thanks,

Marty

Spiders and salmon,

I prefer to use spoons and Apex lures behind my spiders... I run them about 24 inches behind the last teaser. Have caught plenty of coho and nooky on them that way. I would think that, given the right conditions, a superbar trolled slow on the surface would work on the coho's. Someone's gotta try!

Well, I put out the pink Archer Super Bar Yesterday on a trial run so see if the catch fish. Answer is................................................ .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ........................................ Yes! Only had it out a little while as a last ditch effort to try to get something going. Good thing too as it produced two fish we would not have caught. Worked great Fred.

I hung it behind a diver with a Green glo hootchie and a chunk of herring. Two dead fish were the result.

Thanks Fred.

Was gonna try them last weekend but left them in my other rig. Tried the traditional stuff and it was not happening. Put the archer bar in and 5 minutes later fish on. Kinda fun to see it in the water trolled at a slow speed for nooks and coho. Can't wait to give it a go for tuna. Just need the tuna to show up.

Any fish that will take a baitfish (um, just about all fish that is) will be attracted to a presentation that is supremely natural. A spread that simulates a small bait ball so well is more natural and more easily noticed than an individual lure. This is the elementary common sense that Fred tries to get us dummies to grasp. I have not fished Captain Archer's Spiders myself (just other spreader bars) and they seem to be simply a logical variation of the dredges and jig boat spreads that have been fished since the advent of modern commercial fishing. I think the only thing probably not catchable on them, if the right size of baits are on them (from Sabiki to Skip Jack sized lures) are fish that don't eat other fish...that would seem to leave filter feeders of plankton as the only fish that swim that are not interested in this type of presentation...you can catch anything from Sardines to Cow Tuna and Marlin and their appropriate fresh water counterparts too...imo .

Yes and No.

Sockeye Salmon are filter feeders and they can be tricked into striking a slow trolled small Black or Pink something close behind a flasher so they'd probably go for the Superbar as well.

Time wil tell!
