MLPA

I had to leave during the "glow fish" part of the meeting (so much for a 10a.m. start). Anything positive happen during part 4 of the meeting?

Re: MLPA

Joe,
Lots of talking to include the Ab Guy(had to be there) . Looks like decisions will be made sometime in Nov or Dec. That will determine the direction to start implementing MLPA's. One is already in place on the cental coast.
It was a pretty disappointing turnout as far as the everyday angler and club/boards. Oceanside Anglers had a total of 8 including myself, more than most but not enough. Total # around 70 mostly industry types. People that fight our battles for us. The Fletchers, UASC reps, IGFA, Pure fishing.... and one young boy who did the best job off all. "I wish to fish for 50 years".

So I have 2 questions for everyone that didn't show.

1)How many of you learned to fish in the local kelp forests and didn't show?

2)How many of you won't be able to teach your kids to fish in that same kelp because you can't take the time to stand up for your rights?

Re: MLPA

Thanx for the response. I was actually suprised at how fair the board seemed toward the first 5-6 speakers before I had to leave.

It gave me some hope that some of these guys might actually be realist's.
Of course I only caught 1/3 or so of the meeting.

Looking foreward to the next meeting.

Does anyone know if there are posted minutes of these things???

Jack my wife had the same estimate, about 70, though she did not break it out as to types. All in all, she said it went well. She's experienced at reading the Commissioners and apparently Hattoy clearly stated that the decision (where next) resides with the Commission and not the BRTF. That's good news as the BRTF tried make a preemptive move and bring it down here. There's a couple reasons being bandied about why they would want to bring it down here next, but that delves deeply into some individual politics. Again, she that those who spoke did an excellent job. Also, a staffer for the commission commented that they received letters in thousands from the enviros, but they were all the same letter. In contrast, the fishing side submitted a few hundred letters, but they were all individually written, most with unique points being driven home. They do take notice of that.

Re: MLPA

Steve,
Your wife did a great job today on both topics. Can you or your wife get us an email address or mailing address for the commission so we can send more letters. Jack

Re: MLPA

I was there and thought that those who spoke, except for the ab guy, did a pretty good job of trying to get the message across. As stated above it also was not a cookie cutter response, most had valid individual points. Too bad it took so long to get to the topic today. I also felt that the commision was leaning toward going North first from what I heard them say in today's meeting. With them stating that before the topic I think some felt they did not have to state their point. We all know the MLPA is coming, we should be getting involved and helping them get the right information to make an informed decision.
BTW it was good of the board members to applaud the kid for speaking he did a good job.

Jack, I'm sure that April can come up with the private e-mails for each commissioner. After the meeting in SD, she was on her way to meetings in Monterey and SF. I'll see her late Saturday night after day one of the DAC Marlin tourney. I'll ask her then and also leave her a note as a reminder. Again, thanks for the help.

Re: MLPA

Check the article in the Union Trib today. The article said the southern region will be delayed as there are more fisherman (read $) involved and they won't be able to steamroll the process like they did N Cal.

Re: MLPA

Kurt,
1.75 billion out of SOCAL. State wide 2.5 billion
Got to love the papers (Its not called "fishwrap" for nothing!).
I dont think any of the anglers at that meeting heard that.
I did hear them say they are going to listen to the anglers in NOCAL first and make final rul'ing in Nov or Dec.
The commission can do what ever they want and have in the past. Ask the central coast guys.

I've been quoting that for years since the Ch Islands debacle. Now that they want to EXPAND those areas maybe more folks will figure out what there real intentions are.

I talked to my wife on this. She came away with no conclusion on North vs South. However, the Commission knows that they currently have an imperfect process and they are real wary of imposing that on population dense SoCal. Based on individual meetings with the Commissioners, she believes they have the votes not to bring it to SoCal next, but you just never know.

Interestingly, I'll note that UASC chose not to join the California Fishing Coalition (CFC) which covered the Stakeholder process for CenCal. UASC chose not to join because the CFC included trawlers and gillnetters. Also UASC really was not familiar with that fishery and so technically was not a stakeholder. Now that CenCal is done and the fishermen are unhappy with the result, there has been a slew of attacks on the internet and in WON essentially blaming the result in CenCal on UASC's refusal to participate. In a roundabout way that's really a complement on UASC's influence and ability.
