Yellowfin fishing HELP

Please help me. I am wondering if a spinning reel will be suitable for yellowfin tuna and dorado. I will be going on a 3/4 day boat.

Sure if it's big enough and stout enough. Should hold a minimum of 250 yards of 25 pound test. You should consider grabbing a rent rod too so you have a backup. If you get spooled or something breaks, you don't want to be sitting in the galley all day wishin you were fishin. Good luck.

I gotta admit some of todays spinning rods are pretty advanced these days and very capable but im pretty old school and think conventional is the way to go. 3/4 range though odds are you wont accidently trip onto bigeye or Bluefin so ya should be safe if the size is right. It is nice to be able to cast live bait a distance off the chumming corner!

Wink

Make sure that spool isn't made of plastic -- it should either be aluminum or a pretty dense graphite. Otherwise, that spool might just pop right off. There's also the question as to whether the spinner has enough drag, and can handle the strain of a 25lb yellowfin pullin like a freight train against that bale. And what kind of rod will you be using?

A rental conventional set-up might be your best bet, especially if you're heading out of one the San Diego landings, where you'll most likely get a TLD with a Calstar / Seeker. If you can't cast, just butt hook that sardine and drop it straight into the water. Bingo -- fish on.

It all depends on which spinning reel you are planning on using.

A good spinning reel can handle it. I've caught 60-80lb tarpons in Florida on spinners. They catch over 200lb fish on those reels. You just need a quality reel and pole. It is nice to be able to cast past everyone when flylining. Good luck
