Merc Optimax Opinions

Looking to get some good feedback. I am looking at a boat that is equipped with a 2000 Mercury 200 Optimax obvious 2 stroke but have been reading alot of forums about problems with sensors and such with this engine. I am worried about the engine not being covered by warranty and always being in the shop with repairs. So anyone with a optimax in this year range or with an opinion please put your input.

Thanks JP

Hey Jason

I've got a 150 Optimax. Its been in the shop for misc issues, but probably the most irritating problem was the oil reservoir. The float found in the reservoir under the cowl has a tendency to stick....a lot. Also, the screw top o-ring doesn't alway provide a good seal so when the float doesn't stick, the seal will leak. Sometimes, both issues simultaneously.

I've had to take mine in for issues related to that damn resevoir 3 times. Now to be on the safe side, I carry an extra oil reservoir in the boat.

On the plus side, I'm very satisfied with the fuel economy.

Shoot me a PM on either board if you have any questions.

Maybe Im just not as lucky as some. I have a 2001 225hp DFI Opti. on a 26' Striper. Had to replace a fuel injector at 220 hrs. and power head at 280 hrs. Spark plugs only last about 50 hrs because the elctrode burns off. The plugs are $22.00 ea. It burns lots of oil and fuel mileage sucks. I am under powered, and that may have something to do with the poor mileage.
I am only speaking about the DFI model. Dont know if the EFI is any better.
Next time, Four stroke all the way.
