Moonlight Express was conducting a Coast Guard Auxiliary patrol, under the auspices of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach, the Coast Guard reported.
The incident was reported to the Coast Guard command center at 10:25 a.m. No injuries were reported, and the boat sustained only minimal damage, according to Lt. Andrew Munoz, a Coast Guard spokesman. Coast Guard pollution investigators reported that no oil entered the environment as a result of the incident.
“Auxiliary members must undergo a rigorous qualification process equal to that of the active-duty Coast Guard in order to drive their own private boats to conduct safety patrols for the Coast Guard Auxiliary,” Lt. Munoz said.
An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the incident.
“It’s unfortunate when mishaps such as these happen,” Lt. Munoz said. “We are focusing on getting the boat refloated.”
The Coast Guard Auxiliary, the civilian arm of the Coast Guard, has about 31,000 volunteer members nationwide. Auxiliary members provide public boating safety courses, vessel safety checks and administrative support to the active-duty Coast Guard.

A 51 footer run aground in LB with Coast Guard at the helm. I saw it and it sure looked worse from the stern and starboard sides. I spoke with 2 coasties on the scene and they mentioned that they got a call of a grounding, so they had to call one of their investigators out to the scene and he answered the phone already on the yacht!! The coasties ran the thing aground in a no boat allowed zone.
