boat help

hi. im thinking about buying a used boat by the end of feb. and i was just wondering what i should look for when buying used boats. This is going to be my first boat and i found a 18' tri hull invader, im going to be using it strictly for inshore fishing. I met up with the dude, checked the boat out, looks pretty clean. he said the boat was made of fiberglass and wood. would this cause a headache? from what i saw, i thought it was a pretty good deal. WHAT DEFINES A QUALITY BOAT? straight fiberglass? PLEASE HELP because i dont want to end up buying someone else's problem. give me details on shopping for boats. thanks
-mike

Hi Mike, I would assume that he means a glass hull with wood or glass over wood deck which is normal. Tri hull are usually a rough ride even in moderate chop but they are also stable. Things to check when buying are service records if he has any, motor stringers if its an inboard, the transom, and of course all the mechanical aspects of the boat engine drive steering etc. Take a mechanic friend with you if you have one and check around for other boats that are similar and in that price range. Don't buy the first one you look at you may see a lot of duds before you find a fair deal.

Sea trial what ever you buy.And pay the money to have it checked out first.Better than the cost of fixing it later.

thanks for the advice.. I'd say im pretty young, haven't really reached my career yet.. dont have much cash, but what are some of the boat brands and models i can look up that are from 16' - 18' in length, under $4000, and something i can use around the oil rigs, breakwall, and horseshoe? ALSO WHERE can i look for these deals? I honestly don't know anything about buying boats and buying an Aluminum boat is not an option for me.
