96 johnson 50hp-2 stroke(major oil smoke)

I was coming in under high rpm's(4000ish) on Saturday from point loma kelp and looked back to see major smoke pouring out. The engine was burning oil perfectly normal earlier when I was wide open and the engine was well warmed up. I backed off on the throttle and the exhaust/smoke went back to normal . I cruised for a while and went back to wide open and the major oil smoke went crazy again after a few minutes. I had just put in brand new plugs in her too and continued to run/idle and perform perfectly even as it the smoke bellowed. Any idea's on trouble shooting. A short history that may or may not make a difference. The weekend before I tried to put her in at lake Irvine and she started but would not hold idle as the plugs were fouled and in pour shape. I did not have any new plugs on me so I went back home, put in new plugs and it started and idled perfectly. Do you think may have some type of build up somewhere? We replaced the VRO pump two years ago if that helps. Any help is greatly appreciated. It's probably just need some small adjustment but I'm not very mechanical.
Thanks,
Mark

The VRO pumps I'm familiar with have a small red lever on them - this thing only turns about half a turn but my buddy had the same problem as you and we fiddled with this lever and got it to clear up. Not a real technical response...

I know it's a small half turn some where but I'll probably turn it the wrong way. Thanks guys
