I was changing plugs on my engines the other day when the resident dock mechanic came by to chit chat.....he told me to pour a little water down the carb to flash off the carbon deposits on the cylinders....anyone ever do this?......Chrysler 318's are what I have.....

I don't know if the same will apply to your eng, but we do something similar to our jet engines. Hot section(combustion chamber) wash with soap and water, good rinse, then fire it up to dry it out. Cleans it out and improves compression/combustion.

Ever pulled the head off a motor with a crack in the water jacket or head gasket? It's easy to find cause there's no carbon on that piston or chamber.
The trick is to pour a small amount at a time because if you don't you will hydro lock the motor bending a rod.
Remember the old "water injection" systems that sprayed through a nozzle in the air cleaner in the 70-80's. They would keep a motor super clean inside. They sold them to eliminate detonation when pump gas went down on octane and we were still tryng to run 12.5:1 compression on the street.
It won't hurt a thing - just be careful.

With the engine running you can drizzle water down the carb.. I have done this before with no harm to the engine. I used a plastic bottle with my thumb over the top to meter the flow.

That work on any engine like a lawnmower or rototiller

Most people don't know it but there is already some water in the fuel, just not enough to 'steam clean' the engine. A light spray, with a spray bottle, over the carb intake will add considerably more moisture to the ingoing air without harming the engine. A lot of airplane engines have water injection systems because the air at higher altitudes is extremely 'dry' and water injection does boost horsepower if properly metered.
For some reason, it doesn't work as well with 2 stroke engines as it apparently doesn't mix as well with the gas because of the oil already in the mix.

I was a Chrysler mechanic in another life, and it works. Just run the rpms up to the 1000-1500 when you do it. You'll know when your pouring too much in, the engine will start to sputter out.
Depending on how old the engine is, the valve seals were usually the main plug fouling culprits.

I don't know if any of you guys have ever heard of this, but my uncle developed a six cycle engine not to long ago. The extra cycle is powered by water injected right on the hot piston creating steam for an extra power stroke. check it out at: Inside Bruce Crower’s Six-Stroke Engine - AutoWeek Magazine |
