Can anyone recommend a boatyard or secure yard that I can have someone paint my boat in the SD area? I'm currently pricing a paint job (top & bottom) for my 28' Skipjack. If there is a painting room available, even better. It will need 2 - 3 weeks or up to a month from start to finish, and the less cost the better. Looking forward to hearing suggestions.

Dave,
Thats a bit big for my outfit. I know guys with booths that big but they don't spray LP's which is what I assume you want. Try Knight and Carver (619) 336-4141 in San Diego. I've worked in there yard on sporty's and have seen your size of boat(s) being refinished there as of last winter. They put scaffold around it and wrap the structure with plastic. Its an instant booth. Wish you luck.

We'll see... anyone else have a suggestion?

Anyone familiar with any of these boatyards? As I mentioned, I'm looking for a secure yard that I can have my 28' Skipjack painted, possibly a ventilated paint room and the less cost the better. I'm hoping the yards are slow with room during the off season...

driscolls mission bay is a self help yard ,you do the work your self or sub it out that is the cheapest way to go , knight and carver if you have them paint you only pay for the paint job no lay days but they are good and pricey . that said ask around there are goog boat painters that will do it for you at driscolls.

Whoa Nelly. At 2 - 3 weeks minimum, that's crazy steep!
Any other ideas?

Used to be that Driscoll's Mission Bay would allow the owner and "friends" work on the boat in the "do it yourself yard" but not allow sub let labor (liability and insurance questions as I recall)..also there were some restrictions on bottom paint (brand and type) and I think they even insisted that the paint be purchased from them..all that may have changed by now as it's been several years since I hauled there...Kohler's on Shelter Island used to be a little more lenient about things but they have just undergone a major refit and may not be so easy to deal with on do it yourself work..

Call Grant's Fiberglass & High Tech Coatings at 760.644.1943. He just completed a fabrication job for me and I would definitely go back.

Dave- what exactly is gonna take you 3 weeks to do? Can't you do all the glasswork and fairing necessary (I'm guessing you are with that amount of time) in your storage spot, or infront of your house, or by your work? I know Irvine has tons of behind the business driveways and stuff.... You can always roll your primer on, since you have to sand it anyway. Just do it in a week with no forecasted rain. That way all you gotta do is roll up with a primed boat and shoot one day, let it dry for another day, maybe two, and take her back home. Hell, my last boat I sprayed single part Interlux primer and topcoat with the boat parked infront of my house, just had to make sure my truck was upwind .

I've priced the work with paint shops / qualified individuals here in OC, and a painter in SD. Just looking into where I can park it and paint it in case I decide to do it in SD. Most likely gonna do the boat in Sterling LP in a week or two, presuming I find a reasonably priced yard or location. Again, and the pics don't show the worst, but the 30 year old boat's gelcoat is shot...and the prior owner Awlgriped the transom...here's a couple pics:
Should look like a new boat in a month... or maybe two after she's all back together with new electronics, etc.
