Impeller Help Please

My impeller blew on me and am having trouble finding a replacement.

Engine AQ140A Diesel
OD: Volvo 280
Raw Water Pump: Johnson Pump AB Pt.# 10-24061-1
Jabcso Impeller: 17937

The Jabsco part number is machine stamped on the old impeller and has no other numbers on it other than a lone machine stamped "4" on the other side from the part number.

When cross referencing I find 17937-0001 and in fact purchased one. However it's about 1/4 of an inch too big to fit in the raw water pump housing.

Is there such a thing as a Jabsco 17937? If so where do I get it?

Edit: Stoll Engine will only tell me to bring the old impeller in and they look at it. Problem is the old impeller totally beat up, they won't be able to measure the size.

I don't know the level of your mechanical ability so please don't take offense. The impeller vanes are larger than the housing they fit into. You must spin the impeller into place going in the same direction the pump spins using a little vasoline. If you take the impeller hub and the vane pieces to them they should be able to match it up. It can't be that hard to find an impeller. How about Sunset Marine?? IIRC They are a VP dealer.

No offense taken at all. Are you saying that the impeller actually rubs against the inside of the pump housing? The impeller I had was about a 1/4 inch wider than the pump housing itself.

Re: Impeller Help Please

The impeller is larger then the pump housing and the fins will bend over and rub the housing when installed. I use silicone spray to install new impellers

Re: Impeller Help Please

hhhmmmm sounds like maybe the one I had was the right one then. Didn't think it'd rub the walls.

Thanks!

Re: Impeller Help Please

Even though the pump is marked Johnson some engines have "proprietory" pumps and you can only get parts from that mfg. That may be the case here if it really doesn't fit. If you take the impeller in they can match it up even if it's torn up. Which leads to the bigger issue...is your engine fresh water cooled because if so you need to find all of the "missing" pieces of the impeller or you will have a restriction leading to an overheat problem. So reassemble it like a puzzle and find all the parts.

Another thing to look at is the pump housing and cam for wear or damage that will impair your new impeller if the old one was so torn up. And it has to fit tight to create the suction of the seawater, if it spins freely it won't have enough draw.

Re: Impeller Help Please

yeah the impellers that i've replaced on ob evinrude & mercurys the impeller is actually very tight to the housing. i have to put a good amount of the evinrude triple grease to ease them in. and the blades are curved/bent inside the housing.

Re: Impeller Help Please

The impeller was loaded up in the short (exit) tube that leads to the water filter, and in the (intake) tube that leads to the raw water pump. None got past the filter and we blew all the pieces out of the other side with water pressure. I believe we're good there.

According to what I've read here, looks I'm back to picking up that same impeller. Thanks everyone.
