changing springs on a trailer

Just wondering if there are any tips or tricks to it before I attempt it.
They are small 26" double eyes with 2 springs.

Re: changing springs on a trailer

I'll put all new hardware.
Will the spring be a bitch to bend, should I leave the tire on?
I'll be replacing the u bolts that hold the springs on the axle too.

Re: changing springs on a trailer

Kroil, PB Blaster, and use aluminum based/marine grade grease (non-lithium) on the parts when you re-assemble. Spray the parts with Blue CorrosionX after you wash the boat and trailer after trips.

Re: changing springs on a trailer

I converted my brake system from drum to disc and also replaced four leaf springs, it took twice as long to take everything off than it did to put it back together. The assembly was pretty easy, total assembly time was about 6-8 hours with no help.

Re: changing springs on a trailer

its a pretty easy, but time consuming operation (12 pack mandatory). I put a thread up a while ago in the Boat forum with some pics....might come in handy.

found it:

By new bolts and sawzall or cut the old bolts with a cutting wheel and go all stainless.

Re: changing springs on a trailer

Get a disc grinder and just cut everything off including the springs. Don't waste any time trying to finesse anything.

Re: changing springs on a trailer

Got to watch the stainless fasteners. Some are very soft and not good for a spring on a trailer.

Fire wrench will do a fast job. Oh, watch the potential for fire with anything that throws sparks.

Couldn't agree more!!! I can't believe how much time I wasted trying to justify clean removal of the old crap, I had pipe wrenches and pry bars and grinders and vise grips and more vise grips and wd 40 and band aids and a fucking headache!! I finally got the sawzall out and BAM!!! Much easier and definately much cleaner. EZEE PEZEE JAPANESEE!!!

Sawzall tip is good, but ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE STAINLESS HARDWARE!!!! Wherever the stainless touches the trailer will accelerate the galvanic corrosion OF YOUR TRAILER, drastically reducing it's life. Been there, done that.
