Painting a trailer

What's the best stuff to paint a trailer with, seeing as how I need to cover surface rust? I don't want to kill myself removing mild rust on a 27' trailer.

Re: Painting a trailer

Use a rust converter, then use a proper primer and paint.

Re: Painting a trailer

That is one type, the one I was referring to is an acid/potassium dichromate liquid. Converts ferrous iron oxide, to an iron phosphate. Phosphates are rust inhibiting, but this application needs primer and paint when dry.
The one you linked to is already in a polymer so it acts as a primer, basically encapsulating the rust and adhering it to the surface.
These types of products reduce labor, but also perform inhibiting actions, which helps with any flash rusting or re appearing rust.
As long as you do not have rust through they work. If you have rust through, well then you need to start replacing.

Re: Painting a trailer

Here are some options:

If its rust on galvanized, it can be dipped in the accid tank and re galvanized, no scraping. About ·20 cents a lb.

If its A36, I would send it to the sandblaster then coat with a marine epoxy 7-11 mils dft. About 40 cents a lb

If you just want to use a brush on a drill you could probably use a rustoleum paint, followed by sealer.About 12 cents a lb your labor

But if you do not want to scape at all, the only thing I now that will stick and seal its an asphalalt sealer that it commonly used for water tanks and driveways, but its pretty soft. About 7 cents a lb, your labor.

--No rockets just paints, coatings, etc!

There are a few on the market-
Jasco Prep and Primer (don't call the company to complain if you don't get it right the first time, they will have to call me and I will call you and bitch at you for not reading directions!!)
OSPHO makes one also (competitor, but basically the same product)

Look at the Big Box stores, Ace Hardware and some of the Paint Manufacturers stores, ie Dunn Edwards, Sherwin Williams, Frazee--

As I don't do sales, I don't have the data handy to find out in your area who sells what.

Re: Painting a trailer

How well does the "Duro Extend" from Home Depot, work as compared to the products mentioned?

Re: Painting a trailer

I am not familiar with that product but from what info I can gather on the internet (cant find the product data sheet) it seems to be an equivalent product, ie a rust converter.
