I broke my boat...need mechanic now!!

So I took the family on the boat to cruise the water and get away from the land hassles. Every thing went good coming out. Get up to about 35 mph then slow it down coming past the fuel docks. Go to ease back into it and pick up speed again...couple pings...and the prop isn't turning any more!! Motor still runs, goes into gear, revs good, no grinding feeling when turn it by hand, spins freely! Good thing my buddy Joe came out with his boat or I would have had to call vessel assist. So now I'm looking for a good mechanic close to MCRD. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Its an I/O.

Junior,
Give us some info on your motor, Merc/volvo etc.... We just may be able to fix this for you with out going to a mech.
also is the boat in your drive way?
Are you on base?

Re: I broke my boat...need mechanic now!!

Ok OMC...... Another story.. next boat make sure you check with us, as One of use will be glad to look at your new/used boat before you buy.

In order of probability.
1. Spun prop hub.
2.Spun coupler
3.broken shifter cable
4. Bad cone clutch

Lets start with 1 first. Take off the prop and lets look at that hub. Take a picture if your not sure. Hussle son the fish are bitten and I aint got all day!
If you dont have the tools then hook it up and bring it to my house in Carlsbad and I'll check it over for you. I'm home today.

Re: I broke my boat...need mechanic now!!

I was with Jr. (fishnbuddy) yeasterday. I was behind him when it made a loud grinding sound, then he was dead in the water. We got the boat started again but would not go into gear. I towed him back to the dock. We started the motor and put it into gear. You can hear it go into gear but not spinning the prop, foward and reverse. We pulled the boat out of the water and removed the prop. Nothin was broked so it has to be internal. The motor is a 235 OMC.

Re: I broke my boat...need mechanic now!!

Just met him and drove down to the boat. 78 omc. 225hp v8 i/o //// 77 or76 style stringer drive

Prop has some burnt rubber and looks a little spun but holding good enough for forward movment in gear at idle. There is no selanoid movment for gear selection,(remember this is a old 78 OMC) and the upper gear oil is burnt. (smell)
He's going to pull the boat up to my house and we are going to pull his drive and get that fixed up as budget permits.

After that we have a minor intake gasket oil leak to fix and some wire/batt issues to clean up.

So follow along as we clean up this ride so one of our marines can fish with his family and enjoy some of the things I sometimes take for granted.

By the way. Nice guy and two very well behaved sons.

Re: I broke my boat...need mechanic now!!

Any one out there have and old OMC stringer manual? All my expereance has been with Merc/Yamaha, even my old shop no longer has the factory manual.
If it's ok with JR we will post up some pics as we go along.

I stoped at the shop on my way home for the intake gaskets so we will pull the drive sunday and do the intake manifold. maybe even get some of the wires cleaned up.
