Which Anchor???

I have a 20' Chaparral Cuddy Cabin. Weighs about 4500 lbs loaded.

I need a new anchor. Recommendations? What holds the best? What's the best bet for getting "unstuck"???

Appreciate any recommendations.

Get a Bruce or Claw style. A 11 lb anchor with 1/4 in chain will hold you tight. I have a 22' with the same anchor and 20' of 5/16 chain. Should of picked up 1/4" instead. I do have a windlass though.

Re: Which Anchor???

Thanks!! I have a new windlass, and it requires 1/4" chain. I have an anchor - old danforth-type that's too big - the vertical bar is about 3', and the distance from the end of the pulpit to the windlass is less than that. Where did you get yours? What's the deepest you anchor? I'm getting 350' of line, and I've got about 15' of 1/4" chain - I'm hoping that would hold in 100' -120'.

Thanks again!

Bob

Re: Which Anchor???

You can pick-up a 11 LB $39.99 to 16 LB $55 Bruce style anchor at Boaters World. The 15" of chain will probably suffice. 20" would be better.

Here is the link.

Re: Which Anchor???

I have a bruce anchor which seems to stick pretty good.
I have had it stuck in kelp twice and used the windlass to pull it up along with the kelp (sorry greenpeace).
Last week I had it stuck good and thought I just bought a new anchor and rode. I put it in reverse and cranked the boat to the port side changing the angle. It popped loose. I am not saying that is the best technique and am interested in others advice as well.
Nostrovia,
dave

Re: Which Anchor???

It really depends on what you want out of it. You want to spend the night on it in a storm or just sit and soak a bait??? HUGE difference.

Re: Which Anchor???

Ron - hope I never get in a situation where I need to ride out a storm. This will be just for fishing.

Re: Which Anchor???

Then go with 2/3rd's or so of your boat length in 1/2" chain and a 15lb bruce (knock off) or a Delta. You'll be good.

Drop it, make it tight and wait for it to grab. Drop a little scope and watch your position.
