Grease For Steering Rod?

Whats the best Grease/Lubricant for the steering rod that runs through the tube in the mounting bracket for the motor. I have 1999 Yamaha 60hp P. It keeps freezing up on me. Ive taken the rod out and cleaned inside the tube and re-greased. There is a small portion of the tube where it has started to rust....the main cause of the rod freezing up. Any suggestions?

Re: Grease For Steering Rod?

It's called the steering tube. Don't ever use the noname blue marine grease crap, I've glued a prop to the shaft and ruined a steering tube with that crap.

Use Mercury Anti Corrosion Grease, I've sworn by that stuff for the last 20 years. I recently got an Evinrude, been trying out the OMC Triple Guard grease. It's also dielectric so it goes on all my electrical connections. Not sure if it works as well as Mercury's for corrosion, but it seems good as well.
