dock line economy vs premium

Is there a big difference in the economy vs premium dock lines for a 18' CC trailered boat ? I currently have the economy from westmarine but the pemium feels and looks nice but is it really needed for just the dock ramp ? Alot more expensive 2 times as much. Thanks again for those who respond !

Lets see - I own a Grady White and I'm asking a question like this?

Seriously though, good cordage in an emergency might save someone's life, even though the length and purpose may not really fit the situation.

Spend the money.

Yep, buying cheap rope is like buying cheap bildge pumps.

Mac just asking has nothing to do with a Grady, saw a guy at the dock with a New Whaler and wanted the cheapest gas for his new twin Verados. Thanks for your input.

Well, I think my point was that if you buy 300 feet of anchor rope - why not just buy a little extra for the dock lines and outfit them accordingly? How much are you going to save? You don't buy the cheap stuff to put your anchor on the bottom - do you?

buy the economy rope, 10 mins at the ramp or bait barge, you don't need premium rope.

Re: dock line economy vs premium

I don't know if there's a real difference in the lines, but you can save a ton of money by buying 100' or more of 3 strand rope and making your own. The splicing of the loops is actually pretty simple - takes just a couple of minutes after your get the hang of it and you'll have lines that are the perfect for your boat (plus enough extra, hopefully to make lines for the fenders, a tail rope, etc)

A ton of sites have tutorials on how to make the splice.
