Restoring "The Great White Steamship" The S. S. Catalina
My parents used to take me as a child to Catalina aboard the S. S. Catalina. There is always talk about restoring her since she was towed to Ensenada. Here are some pics I took last week of this once beautiful vessel.

She was a sweet ol’ gal, and even though I have a history going back before I was nine - spending the entire summer (once out of school) on the island, her present (real and practical) condition doesn’t make her worth the powder to blow her to Hell. Sorry.

Float-bladder installation - pump in air - four sea-going tugs - tow her old bones to 150 feet of water and let the air out: Put her where she can do the most, for some real fish. (in as much as she's already setting in the mud).

I saw her last year and she looks worse in person than in the pictures. It is sad to see a once proud ship slowly deteriorate. Anybody who wants to restore her better have an equal size boatload of money. I agree, she should at least be towed out to sea and sunk, to provide life for some fish, rather than providing a platform for dogs to lay around on.

There's an article about her in the month's "The Log" newspaper. Ensenada has set a deadline for her to be salvaged, otherwise she will be destroyed to clear the channel. Unfortunately there's not enough money for a salvage, and it's probably way to late for such an effort.
