8' or 8'6" beam?

Okay all you boat owners in the 21 - 26ft range.....in light of my search for my first boat, most of the boats I've been on are 8'6" and above beam. Does that extra 6 inches make a big difference in the boat on a bad day of wind and chop?

Think in terms of Skipjack 24 Open with 8' beam vs......other 21 - 26 ft boats with 8'6" beam.

the wider the more stable, and yes 6" make a big difference. Just ask your girl friend.................

Ouch! btw measure beam for yourself as there seems to be diiferent ways it is done. Top of gunnel, bottom of hull and then rounded up or down, take your pick.

Re: 8' or 8'6" beam?

The ratio of 3 to 1 seems to be just about right. But are you talking about at drift? or coming home up hill? Deep Vees come home in the slop better but roll on the drift. Modified Vee's drift stable but pound coming home in the slop. The amount of dead rise has a lot to do with this as does the weight of the boat. Big heavy boats ride better.

But if your talking about being comfortable in the wind and the slop while your coming home, for me it means being dry and out of the weather. A walk around with a hardtop with eisenglass, pilot house, enclosed fly bridge all come to mind.

That skippy 24 open with a hardtop and some eisenglass would be a nice ride.

I'm no expert but the 9 foot beam on our 23'6" boat is awesome and feels considerably larger than a boat with an 8 foot beam.
