1988 19 ft. 2.3 omc bayliner distributer problems

I have a 1988 2.3 omc (ford) motor in my bayliner and i am having problems with the distributer gears and the auxiliary gears. They i have already replaced them twice because they are stripping eachother bald. No idea why this is happening but cant seem to figure it out. I have read about this problem with other people but have not found the problem. any help would be appreciated trying to get ready for the season and im cutting it close!

(Pull the distibutor - look in the hole with a bright LED: Cam Gear?)
distributers out. This is the third time with the same problem. and its an overhead cam so its an auxiliary gear that runs the distributer. no body seems to know much about these motors including me.

The distributor has to interface with something - to drive it. Can you see where they come together? Is there an access to this auxilary gear? The only thing I can come up with immediately is maybe the distributor's not getting lubricant or seating properly and 'floating'.

Any noise when it was running? Movement - side to side - of the distributor body?

The timing belt drives it, when the distributer is pulled you can see where the auxiliary gear sits and interfaces with it. There is access to the aux. gear through the front of the motor in between the cam and the crank and weve had it out twice. There is really no out of line play in the distributer itself and when we pull it its lubricated so thats why were stumped. we kept replacing just the two gears off of old pintos in the junkyard and now finally ive ordered a brand new distributer and aux gear. So i dont want this to happen againnow that im actually spending alot of money. I had it out about 3 times and then boom. the engine just quits and wont fire back up. dead in the water. no noises no warning signs NOTHING! engine runs perfect thats why we just cant figure this out. And yes Those Shavings are ending up where we know they dont belong!

Yikes!

You obviously have a manual for this old girl - so the only other thing I can come up with is whatever bearing assembly that drives the auxilary has gone away - and maybe the timing belt is somehow taking up the bearing clearance - for a while anyway. (?)

Ah! Cunt! It won't come up now! Anyway - is this all one unit that unbolts by itself: coil and distributor together?

Re: 1988 19 ft. 2.3 omc bayliner distributer problems

no the distributer is its own assembly, the coil is seperate. we just found out that the last guy that sold us that aux gear might have sold us one for a 2.0 and not a 2.3. the new one i got is SLIGHTLY different than the last. i guess thats what happens when you scower the junk yards for parts. but it still doesnt explain why the original one went bad. or maybe it wasnt the original and the previous owner did the same thing im doing. On another note, that aux gear pulls straight out of the front of the engine and is a very snug fit. so snug i needed vice grips to rotate it before i put the crank back on. maybe the oil pump has gone bad and is putting alot of pressure on the distributer? once again stumped
