Re: 78MERCRUISER REBUILDeasy?

pretty simple and straight forward if you have the manual, parts are readily available and no sweat for posting in the wrong forum.

Re: 78MERCRUISER REBUILDeasy?

i believe its a 153 gm 4cylinder correct???it looks like a chevy 250 straight 6 with 2 cylinders missing.very easy to work on and very easy to get parts for it.

Re: 78MERCRUISER REBUILDeasy?

My 73 140HP mercruiser is a 181 (maybe 180, 182?) Chevy motor, the machinist referred to it as an Iron Duke,,, or Iron Puke

When I go into an auto parts store to get stuff, ignition wires, water pump, etc, I tell them I have a 1967 Chevy II with a 153ci 4cyl. Most of the external stuff will bolt up and work, BUT IS NOT "marine grade". Car starters and alternators are not spark proof like the marine versions, take your chances..............

Re: 78MERCRUISER REBUILDeasy?

The 140HP motor is pretty simple. I am not a pro by any means but I have had one of these motors. IMO its basically half of a 350V8. The head is very high performance. Be carefull trying to match up any automotive parts with this engine as it was produced to the industrial and marine markets by GM. I am pretty sure the Volvo and OMC models are very similar though.

Good Luck and buy the manual.
