Chart Orientation

Orientation- North Up- fixes the top of the map display to a north heading, Track Up-fixes the tip of the map display to the current track heading, Course Up- fixes the map so the direction of navigation is always “up” and turns the navigation leg line vertical on the screen.

How do you guys have your chartplotters set up? I prefer Course UP, but on many boats I've been on they have it set to North UP which I believe is the default.

North up. It's how I learned to navigate.

Re: Chart Orientation

North up.
Just like reading an atlas.
Do you rotate your map when your driving the car to keep the course up?

This coming from a guy that didn't even know there was a Track UP or a Course UP setting. :pourit:

Yes I do rotate the map...but not while driving.

Re: Chart Orientation

Should always be north up just like a chart. Who cares about track, thats just the direction your going. North up is the beginning of all your calculations like "PSC" per ships compass to true heading, determining set and drift figuring any leeway conditions and not even beginning to begin any rapid radar plotting.

long version of yeah North Up

Jack

Re: Chart Orientation

North up.

Unless I'm West of North...
then I tilt the GPS flat and North aims at the pointy end.
Wait now...North is the side of bouys that gets wet? Right?
