You're the buyer, you make the rules!!! Sea trial and abuse now or pay later. This guy is working you and the title search sounds like a good idea too. If he doesn't have the pink in his possession anyway. And I agree, NOTARIZE!!! good luck

Thanks again for all the opinion and pointers.
I checked out the boat and it "looks" very clean for a 99. Hull, engine, and interior look very clean. Boat and Trailer is near mint (if it were detailed). Tires look new.
A few things throwing me off are that its a 2stroke, not a 4 stroke. Only reason im concerned is because you cant use a 2-stroke at certain lakes and ive heard that eventually other lakes will follow suit. Does anybody know about Mead and or Mojave as far as 2-strokes?? Will existing boat owners be grandfathered in??
Another issue is that the guy had the boat shipped out from Michigan and the registration is not current. Im going to check with Nevada DMV and confirm if back fees will need to be paid or if it doesnt matter when registering the boat in Nevada, but this concerns me. Anybody know or care to elaborate.
Lastly, the engine looks very clean, near mint. There was a little bit of fluid (possibly oil) on the foam pads inside the engine cover, but it appears that it sloshed out of the breather-hole in the top of the plastic oil tank?? Does this sound right??
Other than that, the boat is very nice, clean, she is perty. Interior carpet is great and bimini top snaps onto windshield and is a convertible (which is pretty desirable to me).
Ive made him an offer on the boat and we seem to have agreed on a price. I am going to talk to his bank to confirm the title. Im going to talk to DMV to confirm the registration issue. And try to get more info from NDOW to confirm the issue about the 2-stroke and possible future restrictions.
The purchase will be subject to a sea-trial and and survey by a boat dealer.
Any more input you guys have is appreciated and keep em coming.

michigan salts the roads in winter? check under the fenders for rust. SInce you are having a mechanic check it out, have him pull the wheels and check the bearings.
step on each corner of the deck to check for "spongy" plywood decking = dryrot.
talk with the mechanic about the "30 hours" claim. the factory-applied I.D. stickers on the motor might have a tendency to heat up and discolor with usage.
Its a good boat and you should have no problems with the hull or motor if it checks out "as advertised". Sounds like a great ride for mead and the river.

Any more input you guys have is appreciated and keep em coming. | I wouldn'dt worry too much about it being a 2 stroke. Last time I checked Mead doesn't think it will even attempt to ban 2 strokes for at least 5 years, and by the time they get through the court challanges and appeals, I doubt your motor will still be servicable. A larger problem at Mead however is the decreasing water level. My boat floats in only 18 inches of water, yet Im having problems backing the boat down the ramp far enough to launch it. I've seen many tow vehicles submarged over the real wheels from trying to back far enough to get the boat off the trailer. Makes it a bit hard to drive up the ramp without 4 wheel drive. You might have a problem registering your rig. Nevada DMV does not handle boat registrations, the Dept of wildlife does that. The DMV however registers boat trailers. I bought my boat in California. When I brought it to Nevada DMV, they insisted on my getting them the California title for the trailer, but California normally doesn't issue a seperate title for the trailer when it is purchased with the boat. bottom line is that so far I've not been able to register the trailer.. I'm waiting for California to issue a new title to the trailer, so I can turn in the California title to Nevada and have them issue a Nevada title to me. After that I can bring the title to Nevada DMV and have them issue a new license plate. It's been 8 weeks so far. I hoping to get this done before the California plate expires. Check out if you can get a title for the trailer as well as the boat before you buy it, or be ready to perhaps buy a new trailer in Nevada just to get the damn thing registered. |

X Squid is right about the lake level being low, I launched out of Overton a few months back and............ the marina was GONE? I have a sneaking suspicion they moved it south about 5 miles as I saw unfarmiliar lights while anchored across from Stewarts Point. Lake Mohave is about 10' from full though, just got back from the river a few minutes ago.
What shop are you taking the boat into to get the survey done? I've had good luck and friendly service at all the marine shops,,, except the one off I-15 and Wyoming, weird attitude from those guys a couple of times while buying parts. The $1800 outdrive repair I mentioned was done at this shop,,, and was only supposed to cost $1200 worst case. But, I guess they know their stuff, the outdrive is still in good working order years later. Either way, I still won't go back in the place.
If I remember correctly, there's a Tracker marine dealer on Boulder Hwy somewhere.

Not sure what boat dealer i will take it to, but will probably look on google and try to find the one you mention Dan. Hopefully we will have some good winters soon and Mead will come back. In the meantime there is stil plenty of lake to fish and I plan to be very cautious.
A visit to DMV is planned for Monday regarding the trailer, and a call will be made to NDOW about the registration.
Regarding the 2-stroke motor per NDOW site they will be allowed provided the 2-stroke is direct injection which I believe this one is, but will have that confirmed at the survey.
Need to talk to his lienholder and make sure he is the owner and the transfer of title and possession will work as planned.
Im really hoping everything falls into place because this boat is really nice. I almost paid $7500 for an 03 16' deep V tracker with a 70hp suzuki and looks like I can get this one for a G more. This boat is so much nicer, cleaner, bigger, more comfortable and equipped.
Happy Easter everyone. thanks for your help.

Jason,
Can you post a link to the NDOW page with the 2 stroke info, my small boat has a 80's 2 stroke that runs on pre-mix. Just want to know if somethings coming down the pipe.
$8500, sounds like a sweet deal if it's the boat I'm thinking of. Being that it's 8 years old I'd bet some of the rubber parts need to be replaced, impellar, driveshaft seal(s), wheel bearing seals, etc, along with other maintenance items, fluids, batteries. I'd also look at getting new tires unless they have been replaced recently, I wouldn't want to be towing on 8 year old tires ;-)
Hope it works out!

OK dan, and anyone else interested about the future restrictions on 2 stroke motors at lake Mead and Mohave.... here is what i found....
I did not find this on the website, I had to contact NDOW via telephone and was told that beginning Jan 1, 2013 2-stroke motors will only be allowed on the lake if they have direct injection.
Also, FYI, I checked Diamond Valley Lake website in Hemet, CA and the website says that direct injection 2stroke motors are allowed. According to the DVL site, you must have your boat pass an inspection at the lake prior to putting it in the water. I believe this would be a one time inspection.

The Merc motor would have me running in the other direction, imho.
Lots of deals out there and more to come as things slow down across the board.
My friend just picked up a commercial grade 19' Boston Whaler with a Yamaha 150 for about the same price... Do your homework.
