Scotts connectors?

Or Scotty? Anyway, they are the little wire connectors supplied by Raymarine to connect the GPS wire to the NMEA or SeaTalk wire. They are filled with silicone or grease and are a press fit/crimp type deal. My question is, why? Can you solder and heatshrink these connections? Is there a specific reason these are used?

Thanks Karl. I have 5 more that came with the package. What happened was while helping a buddy of mine, I forgot to cut the tinned end off before crimping. Everything worked except for not getting a GPS signal. It was late in the day so we decided to call it quits for the night. Being a good boat owner, he went back out while I was headed home. Even though we had both move the wires around before that, he checked them again and the connection was made. I'm hoping to go back this weekend to finish up. He's got to get a plate welded for his SeaView so we can install the Radom.

It's cool to do the install after doing mine. It went a lot smoother. Just a few hours including the transom mount 'ducer and flush mounting the GPS antenna. A lot cleaner than my install too. Hell, I even got a Sushi lunch out of the deal.

As connections go, I silver solder and double Ancor heatshrink them all. Once hooked up, they get hit with CorrosionX. Red in the cabin or CC, blue in the engine compartment.

Re: Scotts connectors?

I've been told that you're not supposed to solder the connections because they can develop cracks and break over time.

Re: Scotts connectors?

Soft soldering with a low level # lead base is quite sufficient as is crimping with " Scotties " or weather resistant " Beanies " and a shrink tube solder joint. I always coat my joints liberraly with liquid electrical tape, let it dry and coat again. I'm not a pro, but it works for me. If you can afford it call Surg or Kman, they're the pros here and I would send them my boat, but I'm poor. Stress relief is very important for alieving stress cracks on the soldered joints and crimped joints

Us too. I did the entire install including re-installing tabs for LUNCH ( and a few beers)! Good stuff and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'm sure he'll post the results soon. During the install we both kept saying, "We should take some pix to do a before and after post."

We never did break out the camera. The install included the removal of the last owners cheap ass ghetto fishfinder and liberal use of 5200! The re-install of the tabs is semi-temporary since the old owner possibly did not keep up on his zinc maintenance. That and my buddy's been on my boat with the 12 x 24 drop fins.
