Re: Upgrading to disc brakes

I upgraded from no brakes to disc brakes (former Florida boat and trialer, I guess no brake requirements there). I bought all my stuff from a trailer parts outlet locally. They set me up with everthing needed. It was a pretty simple install. You shoud figure most of a day to do the job, and it helps to have the boat off the trailer if you need to run new brake lines.

Since then I had to do some suspension work to the trailer. I found Champion Trailers, located in Slidell, LA. They have a good website. CHAMPION TRAILER PARTS SUPPLY

They have good customer service (even two weeks after Katrina) and pretty good pricing. The technical support is really sharp. They know trailers.

Hope this helps,
Doug

Re: Upgrading to disc brakes

Pacific trailer has great prices at the shop and Aros trailers also offers a BD discount.

Don't do what I did:

Re: Upgrading to disc brakes

I am right in the middle of my conversion - got all the parts at AROS in El cajon, they use Unique Functional Products - UFP - On The Web

I am going to post my pictures next week. My upgrade has not been that simple as many other things needed replacement. When all is said and done, I will have new axles, suspension, brakes, and master cylinder. The labor has not been that complicated and I do not expect much difficulty with the brake install itself. I did a lot of wire wheel clean-up and some painting to hopefully keep things in better shape. Make sure you inspect your springs - I had no idea how worn out my bushings were until I took the old ones off.

For the brake kit at AROS, it ran $445 + tax using the 10% BD discount. That included everything, new trailer buddies and a 5 prong plug for the truck. I'm waiting for my new axles, but I should be doing a road test next week.
