Boat trailer bunks

I would appreicate any and all your oppinions as to how to handle my situation. I have a 23' Center Console(Panga) flat bottom boat. The trailer it sit's on has four
carpeted 2x6 bunks. Two at 8' and two at 11'. When unloading the boat, you have to back the trailer way too deep to get the back to start to float, then rev the
engine in reverse to get it off the trailer. I thought of putting poly plastic slides
on the bunks over the carpet and hopefully it would slide off easier. That should only cost me $100 + or - My next thought was to lower the risers that support the bunks but that would be more expensive !! What do you think?

Re: Boat trailer bunks

I can't remember what it's called but a buddy of mine had trailer bunks made out of that gray, plastic/urethane 2x6 look'n stuff. Very slippery AND durable. I plan on swapping over as mine break or wear out.

Re: Boat trailer bunks

They make a silcone based spray you can try.
Supposed to be able to just spray it on and it lasts a few months.
A lot cheaper than replacing the bunks.

I tried that, "Liquid Rollers" from WM. It lasted maybe a few dunkings. YMMV

Try raising the height of your trailer ball. I had the same issue. I was using a 3 in drop hitch. I flipped it over raising the trailer 6in. Hasn't completely solved the problem but its not as bad.

Re: Boat trailer bunks

Buy 4 cuz the shipping price is the same for one or a 1000. If you only need two of them to get your boat off the trailer then resell the other two. Just lag them down over the carpet. Minutes install or remove.

Re: Boat trailer bunks

How about extending the tongue? Lowering the risers will help alot. Is this happening here in California? If so, your boat is sitting way too high on the trailer. Unfortunately most trailers are not designed for the boat that sits on them. They must be fabricated to work with the design of your particular hull. Your boat should be floating off the trailer with ease, depending on the tides. Getting it back on is another story! Good Luck

Re: Boat trailer bunks

Before you silicone your bunks be aware that at first the boat will jump off the trailer, do not remove the winch strap or the safety chain till the stern is in the water. You might have your boat self launch on the ramp before you get to the water.

I have one of those little Triumph skiffs and I sprayed my bunks with silicone that I got at ACE hardware for 3-4 bucks a can... Did I also mention that you want to have the bow line firmly in hand too before you give her a push?

Like I said the boat comes off the trailer rather quickly with the slightest push and you look like one strong SOB.

Now when you are getting ready to haul out you'll find as you drive the boat CAREFULLY up on the trailer, as in not too fast, that as soon as you shut off the motor you will slide back off the trailer, this isn't a problem if there are two of you but it really sucks if you are alone. :104167739 :104167739

Don't ask me how I learned to use a lasso ok? Also stow the antenna that sticks up off the side of the console too.:104167739

I'm just glad that there wasn't someone like me there at the ramp with a camera.

Re: Boat trailer bunks

You could also try using sythetic decking 2 x 4's instead of carpeted bunks.

I don't know anyone that's tried it yet, but I bet it would work like a charm.

That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. IFshNXS had it on the trailer/boat he sold to IlDelfino. Super slippery and impervious to the elements. Good to the gel too.
