2000 Mercury Saltwater Optimax 225

Need help, Looking at upsizing this season to a larger boat. Seems that most boats I am lookin at have these motors on them. Can anybody give me feedback on the their experiences with this motor. I am really concerned about fuel economy.

Re: 2000 Mercury Saltwater Optimax 225

I have that same exact motor on my Whaler. I bought the boat used in Nov. 2006. It has almost 700 hours on it. I use the boat a lot, 1 - 3 times a week. So far it's run great, gets great mileage and pushes the boat at a max speed of 37 knots. My Whaler is a 24' Outrage, actually a 25' Outrage. I've heard negative comments about these motors, but I've also heard negative comments about every other brand of outboard too.

I have that same motor on my 25' sportcraft. Had some small problems with it right away, mostly related to the throttle sensor. The biggest problem by far is that it took mercury 18 months to get it right. It was the worst support Ive ever had on anything. Once I got through that its been fine ever since. It actualy tested out at 248 hp on the dino. Great economy and runs very strong.

It's always fun and games until something goes wrong. I USED to have a Merc, and experienced the exact same kind of crappy customer service.

I'll never buy one of those POS Black Bombs again. Mercury SUCKS. If you are settled on an OB motor, get a Suzuki (not a Saluki ) and buy yourself some peace of mind.

I've had nothing but problems with merc outboards. I stay away from them like they're the plague.
