mercruiser Q

I am trying to get the outdrive out of the gimble. It seems like the driveshaft is stuck in the back of the engine. I've been prying like crazy and I've gotten it almost past the 6 studs on the gimble. Maybe moved it outwards 2". Now I have no leverage to pry. I need a better technique short of hooking up a truck to a chain wrapped around the drive. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: mercruiser Q

How about using some wooded blocks to pry on? Act as spacers?

Oooooh rusted gimbal bearing. Was is squealing or grinding? You can lift it up in the back and let it fall to jar it loose. Sometimes you even have to freakin heat em up with a torch to get em off. Good luck.

Re: mercruiser Q

past the end of the studs is almost off. use wood to regain your leverage.
most likely the gimbal is stuck on the shaft and is coming with the drive.

I tried the wood for no love. I have to pull the engine anyways, so I guess I'll start there and then I will be able to pound on the shaft from the inside and hopefully it will pop out that way. Fun fun! Getting the engine out is going to be fun since the boats so high off the ground. Ugg. At least it's fall and the tuna's are not biting boat paint and jumping in the boat.

negative ghost rider. the shaft will prevent you from pulling the engine unless you have room in front. if you do get the engine out beat on the end of the shaft using a piece of wood and very large hammer.

I put the engine hoist into place and then let the air out of the trailer tires. If you have stern railing, you'll have to pull that as-well. Don't worry, it isn't too bad.

Also use your engine hoist on the OD removal. You should have a nice little spot to hook it to on top.

I like hammers.

I've got a few inches in the front. That's what she said anyways. I think the engine will come out with no issues since the shaft is pulling out of the coupler with no issues. The fiberglass in front of the engine is loose and easily removed.
Stay tuned, I think I'm gonna borrow my dad's forklift to get the engine out. I figured that I would take the rail off and pull the tires off the trailer in my driveway but it's probably easier to just use a forklift down the hill.

Oh yeah, no squealing either. If I have to heat it up, I'll be installing a new gimble too. Fucking Mercruisers anyways!

Re: mercruiser Q

Make sure the drive is in forward when you want to remove it. Leave it in gear until you reinstall it. Also a good time to replace internals such as the impeller. Have fun

Re: mercruiser Q

Hi Kurt i dont get much time on the computer but i see you have a severe problem.Your yoke shaft has frozen into the engine coupler when you pull on the drive it comes out a few inches then retracts that means that your streching the rubber coupler. You have to cut the shaft off at the coupler with a sawz all or a torch best with a saw safer. Then pull the engine and replace the coupler and shaft.good luck mig.
