Lower Unit?

Saturday was not meant to be. After spending 20+ hours pulling an existing steering cable and replacing, (extra hour or three because of cable length:drugs: ) I got it back together for the afternoon bite on Saturday. Headed out towards the outer edge of the tempbreak working up the Coronado Canyon at about 2:00pm. About 18nm out the motor starts to slip. First thought, prop, back off to neutral shut it down and check out the prop. Still feel resistance on the prop start her back up and motor is purring, (just like it's supposed to). Slowly excelerate and its starts slipping again at 2000 rpms. The prop is pushing and the motor sounds great untill the prop gets too much torque. Limped in at about 4-5 knots, 5 1/2 hours of stressing to put it on the trailer. Ran great at low rpm's all the way in. It seems that something is slipping with too much torque on the prop. It makes a clancking noise. Going to drain the lower unit and look for the obvious. Any thoughts on what it could be would be appreciated. To make it worse I had to listen to a couple of guys chasing porpoise and tuna in the area I was headed for the first two hours of limping in.

Re: Lower Unit?

Could still be the prop. If it has a rubber bushing, they will separate from the metal. Will work under a light load. Hope this helps. Buy another or use a friends, to verify before tearing into the lower unit. Al

Re: Lower Unit?

Al is right. I had the same thing about a month ago. I entered Quivera Basin and wasn't paying attention to the depth. I got into 1.7 ft. and spun out my SS Prop. I could not get over 2,000 RPM before the engine would race. I did not have a clanking noise. Limped back to So. Shores. Next week I used an Aluminum Prop. I took the SS to Ed at Props of San Diego, 9021 Olive Ave, Sp. Valley, 619.469.5300. He installed a new Collar while I waited. ($75.00) Hope this helps. Jack

Re: Lower Unit?

quite often you cant supply the same amount of torque to get a prop to slip. hope its that because the alternative is the shaft coupler mounted to the flywheel.

Re: Lower Unit?

Thanks guys. I haven't had time to check it out this week. I really hope it's the prop but the clanking is what has me thinking it's something else. I didn't hit anything and it started clanking out of no where. Is the shaft coupler a major repair? Is there any way of testing to see if it's the prop without swithching it out? I'm going to have some time tommorow to get into it. Any and all info is much appreciated.

Did you pull the drain plug and check the gear oil? The drain plug will have a magnet on it and if bad things are going on inside there will be significant metal attached to the magnet. There will ALWAYS be some normal wear metal accumulated on the magnet - what you're looking for will be larger bits.
You may also have a shift cable that needs adjusting to let the dogs (pins) fully engage in the forward position. I would look at this as it's a real simple thing to fix.
