Older (80s) 175HP Evenrude outboard wont shift to FWD gear.

Took my friends boat out today for the first run and we had a hard time shifting to fwd gear. Sometimes it would shift and most of the time it would not. Everything was working fine when we took it out for a 2 hour sea trial Thursday.

Is there a cable I need to adjust? What could be the problem?

I am not an exepert on outboards at any means.. I recently rebuilt the lower for an older (77) 35HP Johnson and had similar problem where it would keep popping out of forward while underway. Considering your forward gear is still in good shape and your clutch-dog not grinded down--as this was what happend to my motor. Have you checked your gear shaft linkage where it connects to your upper and lower units? You might have to play around with it a bit to get it just right in order for your forward gear(which pulls up) to have enough leverage to engage.

sound like u need to adjust the canle or the shift sahft rod

the older johns are nortious for bouncing out of gear
