mercruiser Q

Help me out. The way I see it is that there are two seals that can leak on a mercruiser that let's saltwater in the bottom end and upper end of an outdrive. There's the top seal and one behind the prop. Is there any other places to worry about?

Re: mercruiser Q

Not sure on the year. It's on a 1971 boat. I understand it was replaced with a used unit. I think it's a 165 model. I've got the factory manuals so maybe I can figure out exactly what I have with that.

Re: mercruiser Q

It is probably a Mercruiser 470 with an Alpha drive. Is it a 4 banger? The 470 is a 4 cylinder inline with a 2 barrel carb. They made several models using the same block & head.

Re: mercruiser Q

It's a 165HP inline 6 cylinder. I think they call the outdrive "165". I believe it's alpha.

Re: mercruiser Q

Inline six should be pre alpha I believe. I used a 165 drive before and all I had to do was swap out the yolk off my older V8 dead drive. Gear ratio a little higher than the Model 1.
