gallons per scoop?

How many gallons per scoop of bait is recommended when sizing a bait tank? Also, how many GPH on the bait pump for gallons on a bait tank?

Frank (WaaTooSee) used to use a ratio of 1 gal of Patron to one scoop. Of course MikeyLikesIt was not far behind.

This one is really important for smokey:

When the water is rough slow down to keep from beating the bait on the insides of your bait tank.

Nothing worse than getting out to the dumper with dead bait.

About 20 gallons per scoop minimum - I run a 500 gph with my 22 gal Kodiak tank and it's just about right - I do valve it down if the bait is weak to prevent the current from wearing them out even more!

Re: gallons per scoop?

Personally, I think the minimum is 25g per scoop (although we all have to concede that a "scoop" can vary widely depending on the day, barge, scooper etc.). I tend to run no more than 4 scoops in 105g of capacity and I think 3 scoops is much better (particularly with these water temps).

I measured my tank and it's going to hold about 15 gallons and I have a 500 gph pump. The tank will only be about half filled at 15 gallon because of where the drain hole are. I might attempt to modify it to hold more since the swim step is going to be plenty big for whatever tank I put on it. If I make it hold say 25 gallons, you think it will be ok with a 500 pump?

Should be - depends on where your pump is in relation to the tank - my 500 gph pump is about 2' away from the tank and about 1' below the tank and it can pump too much water for some batches of bait - I installed a ball valve at the tank to regulate it. I had some fairly lame bait this last Friday and I slightly slowed the water coming in so it didn't overpower the poor critters!
Make sure that your water inlet disperses the water in a circular motion - preferrably a slotted directional baffle so that more of the water column is exposed to the new water.

My last boat had a 54 gallon tank and the system worked perfect with a 700 gph pump - again, placement is critical to water quantity...

Re: gallons per scoop?

I'd say I'll have about 4' of hose between the pump and the tank. I think I could easily modify the tank to hold 20+ gallons with a 6" piece of wood. The inlet for the water from the pump is parallel with one of the walls of the tank, which is square, so in theory, I would assume it would make the current in the tank go in a circular motion. It's definately an easier plumbing job on a swim step. I can fix anything but plumbing so the easier the better.
