How long is my shaft?

That should get some attention...

I've got this old 14' aluminum Seaking (or something) boat that was my wife's grandpa's boat. It's been sitting around for ten years or so and I figure I might want to start using it.

How do I measure for outboard shaft length? I'm guessing it's from the top of the transom to the keel, but how far below the keel should the prop sit?

And what would be a good size motor for this thing? I think grandpaps had a 20hp motor at one time which seems kinda much for that little boat...

I'm going to look for a used 4-stroke so's I can put her on the lakes, putt around the bay and maybe even the kelp beds occasionally. 'Course I could load up fuel cans and a compass and go long!

(No, I ain't that stupid...)

Re: How long is my shaft?

Most all 14 lumies are set up for 15" shaft outboards. Got a couple 4hp and 6hp 2005 johny 4strokes left over that could be had for a pretty good price if your interested. They are a little small but will putt around for ever on very little fuel. I prefer 8-10 hp for a 14 lumie but they will get the job done.

HEY! No Hijerking my post!!!

Mike, let me know about the 6hp -- not looking for much to putt around with and that would probably do just fine.

(Oh Kevin, add another $1 to my tab...)

Re: How long is my shaft?

We were asking $1699.00 for the 6hp but they have gone noncurrent and need to be sold asap. Could let one go for $1408.72. I have three of the 6hp engines left but only one 4hp. They are all new never been turned over and have the integrated fuel tank. The 6hp models have a selector valve to run of an external tank. If your really interested I might be able to put a little bend on my manager to cut the price a little but he probably wont budge much.
