What is the average lifespan of a gas or diesel fuel tank? After how many years should the tank be inspected/cleaned/replaced etc. particularly if you are looking at a boat and don't really know it's full history?

If it's metal, hows it installed?
If it's metal and foamed in might be worth a good look.

mine are fine, 37 years old, but then again they are fiberglass. I know that in older skippies, tanks have been an issue. Also have heard a parker horror story or two.

Mine are 33 year old fiberglass tanks and when I had the survey done he said they were in great shape with nothing to worry about.

Mike B | I had to replace mine last year. Check out these sites http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/pdfs/BSC79.pdf http://www.brokeboats.com/badtanks.html

On the older Shamrocks, of which I have owned two, they say about ten years. But the Shamrocks had foamed in aluminum tanks and were famous for being wet. The foam holds moisture against the tank which is bad, bad, bad!

HH | Howie~
Are you having your tank polished every 5 years?
If so, how much are they charging you and where do you take it? Last I checked this is very very costly.
If you have a good source please let me know, as I would like to have the info for a future reference.
One other thing though, I dont belive polishing your tank will greatly increase the life on many tanks, as the problem occures on many from corrosion on the outside. Foamed in tanks are great, but they can also be a big problem if water becomes logged in and around the foam.
Just something to think about.
