Hey Kevin?

I'm starting to get some strange noises coming from my power tilt motor.

I'm thinking there may be some corrosion on the commutator and the brushs are chattering or something like that.

Do you have any thoughts on this?

switch?

Could be your trim tilt switch, low oil level, or the motor is ready to go, maybe a wire got some corrossion wicking through. Those are pretty much the common failures.
Obviously the oil level, switch, and wire check is the cheapest way to trouble shoot.
Maybe someone else will chime in with what they think.

I had the thing apart several years ago because the wires were cracked and shorting out on the hull. When I replaced the wire it all comes in one long section connected to the brushes. Looks like I could rebuild the motor if its failing and I had too.

1995 Mercury 40 horse...the motor and fluid reservoir, pump and trim cylinder mount on the motor bracket just above the water line. I'll know more when I take the damm thing apart again. $57.00 just for the seal kit...damm!!

Thanks for the input Kevin.

new

around 400 bucks new if you shop around.
I can't hear the noise so It's really hard to come to a specific diagogtics.
Is it intermintent or steady?
Does it seem to come from one specific place?
Does it still work and just make that sound?

Picture of Motor

Sounds short of like something is starting to bind in there. Like a grinding sound. It still works so I'm thinking I'll be able to take it down and fix whatever it is.

Doesn't do it all the time.. usually when its going up. Don't think I'll have time this week to look at it. But next weekend I'm gonna tear into it. I'll keep you posted. There is really not a whole lot to it. The sounds are coming from the motor. Could also be the drive shaft (11) starting to slip or bind.

Thanks for the help.
