redoing entire deck

peeled off some crappy vinyl.and have some super strength glue covering most of the deck.what i can`t get off with sanding(60-80 grit) and acetone i was going to cover in resin.after that i was going to tape off sections to apply non skid particles in resin, peel off tape and then cover in a roll on gel coat.should i apply one or 2 coats of gel coat? does this sound like a proper way to do this? i looked a LP paint but almost :shithappe when i priced it out at over $500.00. i figure the gel coat and resin will run me about $150.00 (got a gallon of resin with hardener for $14.99 at BW.) a gallon of gelcoat will run me about $100.00.any other ideas? after this is done the rest of the project will be smooth sailing.want to do this right so it last`s for a long time. also redoing boards that run down the bilge area and gas tank.having some 3/4" birch plywood cut to fit then was going to cover in several coats of resin then gel coat over the top of the resin.is this a correct way to do this? or would a penetrating epoxy be the better way to go? should i use a thinner in the resin?(so it absorbs before it dries?)

I'm no expert, but I'd alteast lay some glass over that hole. Sand down thru the gel caot till you hit glass, then ad the dowl, then a few sheets of glass then the gelcoat.

I wouldnt think the epoxy would have any strength.

That resin sounds awefully CHEAP!!! Make sure you check the batch/manufacturing(?) date on it, as they have a life span of about 6 months. After that, the shit degrades exponentially in its ability to stick. The bad thing with sour resin is that you won't know it until you see delamination. RE: 2 coats, Are you spraying or rolling on your gelcoat? as it's not that much gelcoat you are applying. Make sure you also add wax to you final coat of gelcoat or otherwise the shit will never cure & stay tacky.

Re: redoing entire deck

it`s new resin (they just had some special on it.) i plan on rolling/brushing it on.sanded the whole deck today.(GODDAMN I ITCH!) getting a grip texture tomorrow.(was recommended to get chopped up tennis balls??? ) so i plan to mix the resin and brush it on gonna add matt or cloth to some low spots. after the first coat dries i`m going to tape off areas to add the texture another coat of resin.then gel coat with 2 coats.(rolled on)

I'd like to use 2oz mat slammed with a 18oz woven on decks. make sure your underside of the deck shold have approx. 1.5 times more than the gelcoat side to give it the tensile strength from people standing on it. Hmm. chopped up balls. if you want a real rough surface, you can use vermiculite(sp?) from nursery as well. what is the gel thickness you're trying to get? 2 coats not that much fo a deck IMO.

Re: redoing entire deck

don`t know about gel coat thickness.was told to mix in some "talc" to thicken the gel coat. was told this by a guy who built blackman boats.he is going to help me with this part of the project.

Re: redoing entire deck

got the layer of glass on it. all sanded and almost ready to lay down gel coat. ended up going to diversified materials and getting the cloth, resin and gel coat there. commercial grade materials for half of what W.M. charges. going with a fine(looks like sand) or medium walnut shells. hoping to get it wrapped up this weekend .got a date with the fabricator next week to get the all stainless t-top installed.then wiring. should be ready by the time chickens are in range.

Re: redoing entire deck

Like they said except use silica, not walnut shells or dolomite. Don't forget the PVA for gelcoat. Try not to thin out the resin too much or it may run away and create air voids like crazy (google the term: thixotropic index). Good luck.

Re: redoing entire deck

I had an old inflatable and took the boards down to Line X truck bed liners --- it was black because back in the day that was the only color they had -- now they have all kinds of colors -- anyway the shit was so nice because it never got hot in the sun -- I did allot of diving with the boat -- very easy on the knees too.. Just a thought???? what do you guys think about that stuff?
