If you have them, what brand/type of downriggers do you have on your boat? Your comments as to why or whatever else you want to add would be cool. Thanks.
That last selection should say "Other - Electric". Can't figure out how to change it. Sorry.
__________________________________________________ ________________________________ OK, here's a different graphical representation of the results... And here's a similar study done on the Striper Owner's Club forum, which has members based across the United States, but a pretty large following from Northern California, where it originated.
I think the comparison is still pretty interesting. Both studies say alot for Scotty and Cannon. I think the Big John numbers would be alot higher if someone was to study the Great Lakes area; that speculation is based on what I've personally seen on charters out of Lake Ontario. Alot of skippers there with Big John Downriggers.
Just something to do during the winter months... Pie charts updated 10/19/06.

I have Cannon electric. 1st reason being I got them cheap, $300 for a pair. I also like the power down ability, better descent control.

In my experience the best thing about Canon is the customer service. I have twice cracked the spool on the uni troll and they were replaced in just a few days with a phone call at no charge. The problem was that I had replaced the cable with 130 lb. spectra. Under load (like the time I had my head up my ass and trolled over a kelp stringer and hung up the 10lb ball) the thinner diameter spectra worked its way down the inner edge/seam of the spool hence the cracking. I have since put 200lb. mono on the bottom before connecting the spectra and that keeps the spectra from working it's way down to the bottom of the spool. A better way may be to go with 200 lb. spectra.....or keep the cable on, but I really like the way the thinner spectra fishes.

The spectra probably allows for alot less scope angle, but you lose the ion charge capability, which I'm not sure if it's good, bad, helps, hurts (especially with threshers mistakenly whacking the ball instead of the bait). Can't wait to start figuring that one out. Going out on Saturday to try those bad boys out for the first time. Can't wait. Thanks everyone for the feedback and taking part in this poll.

You need to be able to vote for two r three options, I have three different kinds of downriggers, so do I just vote three times? That would be bad data!!

My buddy up in Brigdgeport has the Big John electric ones and there really nice, just used them for four days of fishing all day. I really liked the down switch, makes it really easy. I have a pair of Penn Manuals for my boat, I
havn't installed them yet, and I'm thinking of selling them and getting the electric ones. I got spoiled.

Karl, I'm holding off for right now, after talking to Greg yesterday, we may be adding them to the UnReel, have to wait and see, but if I do I'll get ahold of you first.

Wow only three manual Scotty votes? That surprising to me. They seem to be very popular in the SF bay area.
