old as dirt, simple, reliable, shoot oil out both ends, lot's o'puke out the puke valve, rebuildable cheap, smelly, dirty and most likely smokey
and once again reliable and will take a beating.
huge size for the HP, freaking heavy too.
great for old stinky commercial fishing boats and if you like to go slow.
can run on wd-40, bacon grease, or asphalt.
fuel injectors are self priming.
legend has it you can block the exhaust valves with spoons etc and rope start by leaving one active, simply pull the spoons and each hole starts to fire. That could come in handy if you have no batts in the middle of nowhere.
iron workhorse. engine room will never be rusty.

you gotta give the whole story...type of boat, are they turbos, how many hours. how much hp, when were they rebuilt, stuff like that. As far as detroits go in general. Very reliable, they leak, easy to rebuild, they will run forever if taken care of

They are 2 cycle and tend to use more fuel than 4 cycle. They are also very noisy. A worn out Detroit will run a long time if you have starting fluid.
