Shifting problem.... not another problem

Mercury Force 120 outboard
Well.....I get the steering cable fixed and that works fine
Go to put the shift lever back on and reverse is hard as shit
The shift lines don't seem to be binding down the gunnel
Possible simple adjustment maybe???
what happened??
A little more help please

Here are some pics

So...I unhooked the shift cables on both ends and they move free as a bird
check the shift lever and it moves free as a bird with cables detached
Here is where I believe prob to be.
pic 1.... shows the cable detached from that arm....under that arm is a shaft that goes down into the lower unit and it seems to be stuck in there
So....what is going on inside that.
Pic 2 shows shaft I am talking about

this freakin blows :ranton: slap:

Scarleg,

It would appear that you're fucked once again my friend.

:It__s_Out

Seriously though, we need some love from the BD crew on this one.

Saturday we were getting ready to button the job up and all. Steering worked like a champ.....check

Tested all of the electronics...check.

Throw the throttle in forward....check.....SWEEETNESS. Last check....reverse.....ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Make sure you adjust for nuetral. That rod in your second photo is the shifter linkage going down to your gear case. Right there in that area is an adjustment. Did you move that at all? Possible when you put the new cable in you lost your nuetral center for some other reason.

Shift shaft seal!

If it is still hard to move the shaft up and down with the linkage undone then I will bet that could be it. If not that I hope it is NOT the coupler in the lower as they are a bitch to get to.

The shift shaft seal can swell and grab onto the shaft like glue.
