Anybody had this problem???

We have a Johnson 200 hp. It's a 92 two stroke. We've had this boat about six months. It's always been slow to start. The previous owner said it floods easy, which it does, but something else is goin on too. We've replaced batteries and had the electrical system worked on by a talented guy. Dr. Electron.

Have had two mechanics look at it, and diagnose degrees of low spark to no spark to different plugs at different times. Last round the electrical system was checked and supposedly had plenty of power going to the power pack but not going out of it. Replaced that at two hundred bucks for zero difference.

We are getting spark to three plugs at this point, but once it is started and warms up all plugs seem to work, in that one by one each spark plug wire can be taken off the plug and the engine still starts. Any one of the plugs is enough to run the motor after it is started up and running. Once it starts, it's good for the day. By the next morning, it's the same shit.

Through testing and trying different ways to start it, we discovered that it will start initially, if one of the plugs is taken out of the head. Does this point to a compression issue?

I'm terrible at this shit and am hoping someone has dealt with this and can help. Thanks alot.

Mark

Sounds like a primary issue not a compression issue. My guess is the spark is weak and getting blown out by the compression. Does the power pack include the coil.

Sound somewhat similar to the problem i had with my carburated Mercury Outboard.
It was the ignition switch.

Primary is the low voltage side of the coil.

Post the model# not the serial#, and I'll get her diagnosed for ya. As with most of these johny's this could be the damn VRO pump. I have seen over 50 brand new out of the box create this problem. The oil side of the pump drizzles like it's got the clapp, and fills the carb bowls with oil. As soon as you turn the motor over it drenches the plugs making it a mother fucker to start. Go out to her in the morning after she sat all night and pop the drain screw out of one of the lower carbs. Drain it into a cup and inspect. will probably be 90 parts oil to 1 part gas. If this is so than replace the pump and hope you get a good one. Scince bombardier has taken over we have got much better quallity stuff. If no extra oil in mix then it is one of a few things. Sounds like either cross firing power packs (have seen many out of the box), or weak coils that are returning to normal function after warming up and expanding from the heat to make every thing seem normal. There are many more possibilities but I like to start with the most common.

You fuckin RULE bro I don't know you but you are always quick to help and give advice! You helped my brother out Baby Giant and he has nothing but great things to say so you must be a long lost brother...... Hope we run into each other one day for all that you have done to our boat I at least owe you a 6er of choice. You are a benefit to all of us so for what it's worth Thank you.
