Impeller change on Volvo 5.7

OK you wrenchheads, how does one change out the water pump impeller on a late model Volvo 5.7?

I'm assuming you torque the belt tightener, then flip the belt off the "circulating pump" flywheel, undo the 4 bolts on the flywheel, pull off the flywheel and the impeller shows itself?? Pull off, replace new impeller and reverse all of the above???

I'd suggest removing the hose after taking off the pump pully. be sure to use a new gasket with the new pump.

Depends if it's the harmonic balancer mounted pump or side mount pulley driven. Most late models are on the HB and just remove the housing screws pull impeller housing away from pump. Remove impeller and reinstall in the opposite direction. Make sure to lube the impeller and housing well before installing or you will surely shorten the impellers life span.

harmonica?

I got no clue what type this is.

Above the crank, in the middle of the block there's a flywheel about 4" diameter labeled "Circulating Pump". At the bottom of the block, there's a small wheel with a hose going into and out of a pump. I don't know where this goes, or what it pumps.

Seems everytime I fix something myself, I end up with extra parts that I have no idea where they came from. But I think if it keeps up, I'll be able to build another boat pretty soon!

pumps

DO NOT PULL OFF THE FLYWHEEL!

You have two pumps. The circ pump (27), and the raw water pump (54). Most models have the raw water pump mounted on the harmonic balancer. If you have this type, you simply remove the four bolts on the Johnson pump and replace the impeller. Should take you an hour the first time.

To locate your raw water pump, follow the hose that runs from the bell housing under your engine. It will end up at the raw water pump.

If you have a really old VP280, then the raw water pump is mounted in the same bracket as the alternator and is driven by the fan belt.. For this setup, you need to remove the pump to change the impeller. Usually, you will also have to remove the alternator to get access.

There is no circ pump impeller that can be changed. You change the whole rig.

If you posted some pictures it would be really easy to point out where each pump is.
