Motor Question

Ok Guys,
I bought an 89 johnson for 300 and took it to Sunset and the guy said it had alot of missing parts on the back end which keep it from kicking up in reverse (springs, pins, etc) and that it would cost $125 in parts and another $170 in labor to fix. He said it runs well but could use a tune up/ service. In addition, the tune up will be $200 bucks. What do you guys recommend I do. Do you think its easy for me to get a manual and try to fix it myself with minimal knowlege of motors? The back end that is. Any tips are appreciated.

Ethan, I personnaly would'nt try to do it myself, I spent allmost $ 650.00 on an old 7.5hp having it all rebuilt and I am happy with the outcome. It's been running good for years since I had the work done.

This stuff cost money and I think if you want a good running engine that you don't have to worry about, let the pro's deal with it, they know what there doing and can get the parts and do the work.

It all depends on whether its worth it to you..

But not being a mechanic, I wouldn't even want to try to figure out whats wrong with an engine.

I think you got a good deal on the engine, and I don't think the price they quoted is out of line.

Just my .02

18 and 25 is stressful I used to do full class load with a 40 and 25 hour jobs

Just bustin your chops. If you do it right it can be stressful. Check with a couple guys in the back of the boattrader that fix small outboards. Not to take any work away from Randy as his crew does honest work but I'd get a quote.

Do it yourself

On a scale of 1-10 in dificulty, the reverse lock is around a 3.

You'll probably get a better price on the parts if you do it yourself.

If you do the job, get yourself a spring tool before you start. Using pliers to stretch the springs is for hacks only. Other than that, remove and reassemble.

Last job sent to Sunset Marine (Shelter Island) for a waterpump job resulted in an overheat and warped head for a friend of mine. The alarms had been mysteriously disabled and the hack job ended up costing a good friend of mine about $1,500. Sunset Marine in El Cajon would be my choice to service a Johnson.

Good luck!

motor work

I have my boat at sunset right know. I trust them. I am a machinest and have ben around machinery all my adult life. But I do not work on marine engins and out drives for a living .in the amout of time it will take them to fix my problem . It would take me 3x as long.which equates to 60 man hours for me ,doing that part time, after work ect. ect... good luck on your choice.

Got the motor back from Sunset and the reverse lockdown mech looked like it would have been a bitch to fix. Randy did a great job and was very helpful. I was very pleased with the service and the total cost was much less than anticipated. Now im trying put a new impeller in for the water pump in my mercury 25 and the lower unit foot wont come off. it only comes about 1 inch down and is stuck. I dont know if there is some kind of release or what but ive been screwing with it for hours. Any ideas? Its a 98.

Yes it should be in gear when you drop the lower unit. This may be why it's hanging up.try this link good instructions on changing pump
