popped a cable

launched the dink happy this morning, got about a half mile from the ramp when i saw something on the meter. did a series of tight turns at low speed resulting in the steering cable popping. we putted back to the ramp and trailered the boat without much hassle. The steering has gotten progressively stiffer and was going to change the cable anyways as well as the throttle cable. The parts are fairly cheap steering cable approx. $210 and throttle cable depending on size $45 ea. I have never done either of these so was considering having it done and may still do so but Wow were my eyes opened when I got labor prices. the steering was 3 to 5 hrs at $85 per and throttle was 3 hrs at $85 and of course there will be a couple hundred more for the unknowns. Think I can get it done cheaper with a mech. friend. well thats my sad story. It's great to own a boat most of the time lol.

The hardest part is pulling the cables back through the rigging tube. When you pull the old ones out tie a small diameter rope to each cable so you can use it to pull the new one back through. Replace all 3 cables. What kind of motor do you have on it?

mercury 115. Makes sense to tie the string, thx. I thought the hardest part was when the guy told me "we may have to dismount the motor if the bend is too tight" ouch.

It should only take a few minutes to undo the 4 bolts and move it to the port side to get a little extra room.No need to disconnect the wireing harness or fuel lines. It took us around 2.5 hours to change them out on my sons old 18' Invader cc. If you have any other ?'s let me know.

Most Morse cables are 8/32 size. Get a female to female coupling, join the old and new cable then pull the new cable in as you pull the old cable out. Usually easier than pulling with a string.
