Kicker or not?

Still equipping my boat, and the subject of kicker motors has arisen. 23' walkaround, (~4000 lb give or take) single 200 two-stroke outboard. Have Vessel Assist, a good anchor, two GPS's and three VHF's. Anyone see a need for a kicker as well? We're not likely to venture beyond 40 miles offshore.

Get the kicker. They can very use full. Say you want to slow troll a kelp paddy use the kicker. Bouncing the ball for halibut use the kicker. It will save fuel reduce noise, exhaust and give you better low end speed control all good things when fishing. Say you fish all day and and your batteries are dead. Pull start you kicker and you can now get your big boy running. Last but not least it will drag you home when your 200 throws a shit fit

Not sure what 200hp two stroke you have, but a lot of older two strokes suck for trolling. They either run too hot or load up. My 150 and 175 did this. Ran fine in no wake zones, but offhsore and trolling it would run way too hot. Changed the thermos, took them out and even went through the whole cooling system even the poppet valve. If this is the case on your 200, a kicker will solve your trolling issues. Also even if your motor konks out 20 miles out, it still sucks waiting to get towed in.

When you get in trouble out there and you need a kicker, then you will definitely be wishing you had one. It does not hurt getting one if you can afford it. Sounds like you have a back up for your gps and vhf, why not a back up for your motor?

my previous boat I used a yamaha 15hp kicker, I rarely used it, the brackets got so worn from so much bumping that they had to be replaced, it also damaged the transom where is was attached. the extra fuel line plumbing proved to be problematic from being exposed to sun all day(leaks).

you only need one good motor, yes it's nice if your motor fails but like you said, VA and a good radio is all you need.

I think you would be out of your mind or just plain stupid to venture forty miles or even twenty miles off shore without a kicker. There is no substitution for common sense.

By the way, how many motors you have on them planes you fly?

If you can afford a kicker, even if you can't you should always have one. It's like having your own insurance policy.
